Have you ever been in charge of the music at a party, and felt that inexplicable panic? No matter what iTunes, soundcloud, hulkshare or blogs resources available, you’ve just frozen, incapable of selecting a song to keep your expectant crowd moving. Reader, there’s no need to feel ashamed: we’ve all been there. But don’t worry because help has arrived. Professional help.

After watching the likes of Dj Jimmy Jatt, Dj Shina, Dj Humility Dj xclusive (presently my favorite) and other top DJs play at different events

Jason Phillips, aka DJ jasepi, is quickly becoming one of the hottest DJs in Hollywood. He’s spun for the likes of Kanye West, Eva Longoria and the cast of Bones, as well as doing some of the hottest parties in entertainment, such as Ubisoft’s 25th Anniversary Party, the official Grammys pre-party and served as the live DJ for ESPN’s X-Games for five years. If there’s anyone qualified to give advice on DJing, it’s him. So together with Dj Jasepi and Myself MAYOVIRAL, we present to you The 5 Things Every DJ Must Know When Picking Music For Playlists And Parties

5.

Know Your Crowd

Know what you’re stepping into. Is it a house party? A dinner party? A drive to the beach? Each place has a different vibe with different musical expectations and even the biggest DJs in the world tailor their set to where they’re playing and in what country they’re in. Read the crowd by looking out and seeing who you are playing to and make music choices that reflect the listener.

4.

Know Your Music

Knowing how a song is laid out is important when it comes to DJing. Every DJ knows how and where to mix in and out of each song, and having key tracks to transition from music genres — for example, from hip-hop to Afro pop — is a must. Think about it like chess – always plan three to five songs ahead. It’s important to know how to get from one song to another, and that can be as easy as matching the drums or beat of tracks or as difficult as matching the key of tracks.

3.

Have Crowd Favourites

Always have A-songs to tap into if the buzz is slowing. People love to sing along to songs that they’re familiar with — presently in Nigeria, songs like Durosoke, Sho Lee, Limpopo, Skelewu will do the magic!

2.

Challenge The Listener

Everyone has favourite songs that they’ve personally discovered and you shouldn’t be scared to share them. You just need to pick the right time to play them, though. I play my new discoveries in between tracks that people already know. Yeah….that’s the scope.
